Bathroom Products You Should Make From Home

Cosmetics and toiletries are full of potentially harmful chemicals, with women coming into contact with almost 700 ‘chemicals of concern’ each month. Many ingredients can be carcinogenic, meaning they could lead to the emergence of a life threatening illness. If you want to keep your body free from harmful substances, while saving some cash, you should be making your own homemade bathroom products. Start by switching the following products from shop bought to homemade.

Toothpaste

Brushing your teeth is an essential part of oral hygiene, but have you taken the time to read the ingredients? Toothpaste can contain several toxic chemicals, such as fluoride and artificial sweetener. You can easily make your own toothpaste, using natural ingredients.

Combine coconut oil, baking soda, stevia and peppermint essential oil for a gentle, but effective cleaner. This recipe will taste great, while removing plaque and whitening the teeth.

Deodorant

We tend to overuse deodorant, plagued by the constant fear that we might smell. If you are eating cleanly, the chances are you don’t need much deodorant at all. For when you do need it, however, avoid the sprays which can pollute your indoor air.

Homemade deodorant can be made by combining 3 parts coconut oil and baking soda with 2 parts shea butter. Melt the ingredients, mix them up and then place in the fridge to cool. This can be directly applied to the skin and will clog sweat glands as effectively as shop bought deodorant, with none of the unwanted toxins.

Moisturiser

If you live in a small home or regularly travel with a single bag, you may be trying to cut out as many bathroom products as possible. Moisturizer is often the first to go as it is less necessary than toothpaste or deodorant. However, for those with dry skin, it remains an essential item.

Sustainability for small homes is still possible, as long as you avoid the plastic, chemical filled bottles they have in stores. Instead, take a reusable container and fill it with recently melted and mixed coconut oil, olive oil and beeswax. Whisk it up into a soft cream and you’ve got an all natural, moisturizer. Add essential oils of your choice for fragrance.

These simple bathroom products only contain around three products, yet are guaranteed to effectively keep you healthy and clean. They are a great addition to a clean life, free from potentially harmful chemicals. Taking a few minutes to make a batch of toiletries each months will be both cheaper and probably quicker than taking a trip to the local cosmetic store, so there’s really no downsides!
