Weekend Getaways for families

While we are lucky in that we aren’t tied to school or work commitments, and can, in theory, head off for a holiday whenever we want to, we still end up with so many other commitments that it can be tricky to find the time to get away. The girls have so many varying clubs and groups that they don’t like missing, so I have been looking at taking more weekend breaks rather than week-long ones, so I don’t get complained at for missing clubs too much!

Weekends away are a lovely break from the grind of daily life, nothing beats packing up on a Friday night and setting off for a weekend full of adventures and fun. It’s the perfect antidote to the working week.

With so many fantastic places in the UK to visit, and with summer almost here, it is the perfect time to think about a weekend away with the kiddos. Whether you want to stay close to home, or go a little further away, looking for a city break or a peaceful weekend in the countryside, here are of my top five recommendations for a weekend break with your kiddos:

1| Farm Stay in Wales

Kids always are excited by the thought of a farm stay weekend– because kiddos love to play with animals! A farm is a perfect destination if you have little kiddos who want entertaining. There are so many gorgeous farm cottages to choose from in Wales, where you can enjoy the beautiful, peaceful surroundings and your kiddos can enjoy fun farm activities such as animal feeding.

2| A city break in London

Our capital has so much to offer for weekend breaks – whether you want to see the sights, explore the museums, find some local parks or do some shopping London can cover your needs. If you have Harry Potter obsessed kids {who doesn’t?!} then a visit to Platform 9 ¾ at Kings Cross will win you some serious brownie points!

3| A weekend across the sea

Guernsey is just a short trip across the sea yet it will feel like you are in a totally different world, find out how to get there with Condor Ferries. The blue postboxes and £1 notes will fascinate the kiddos, and the Channel Islands are the sunniest place in the UK!

4| Beach break in Cornwall

Pick a sunny weekend, and there isn’t anywhere better to be than a Cornish beach. Spend your weekend running around barefoot and splashing in the sea to building beautiful sandcastles or collecting sea shells, a break at the beach offers endless fun for all ages. Cornish beaches are some of the most beautiful, and you’ll come home feeling relaxed and refreshed.

5| Visit the Lakes

A weekend on the water will please the kids and the adults. There are fewer places more spectacular than the beautiful Lake Windermere in Cumbria. It is England’s largest lake and the area around it is a wonderful place for families weekending. Think tea rooms and waterfalls, nature trails and pub dinners.
