5 things I love to do when I'm home alone

I’m home alone! As a mum with four kids who are homeschooled, time at home alone is a very rare occurrence. I’ve started being stricter and making the husband take the kiddos out for a few hours here and there to allow me time to work. Truthfully, that little bit of alone time is heaven. SO good to have a quiet house and no one shouting ‘MUUUUUUUM’ every five minutes {oh alright – every two minutes}.

This afternoon, G is at the gym, the girls have gone to soft play with friends and the baby is napping. So technically I’m not alone… but it’s as close as. I savour every second of alone time, and there are things I do that just don’t happen when the kids are at home with me…

Here are my five favourite things about being home alone….

  1. Drink HOT coffee/tea  – Not only do I get to drink it whilst it’s still hot, I can leave it precariously perched in the middle of the coffee table with no fear of it being knocked off and spilt all over my rug.
  2. Put my music on – off goes the heavy metal the almost-teenager currently favours, the Katy Perry the tweenager loves, the pop songs the 6 year old has on repeat and the nursery rhymes the baby wants to sing and on goes the record player and one of my favourites – most likely some Bob Dylan, Neil Young or if I’m feeling modern{ish} some She & Him.
  3. Sit down for more than five minutes – I may have an office, but if I’m home alone you’ll most likely find me sunk into the sofa, enjoying sitting still and not having to get up and down like a yo-yo or be climbed over by the baby
  4. Talk to myself – most likely a sign that I’m a lot little big bonkers… but something I’ve always done. Nothing quite beats a conversation with yourself… most days it’s the only way I get any sense or my questions answered!
  5. Raid the pantry – my children have an inane ability to know if I’m in the pantry eating the naughty food {i.e my hidden stash of choclates} and will appear before me befoer I even manage to unwrap anything. Being home alone means I can sneakily eat chocolate without having to share any

Love this post- such a fab list! I love to listen to my music too as the Hubster usually gets a say in the music we listen too when he’s at home (as apparently my choices are depressing!) I love watching all my crappy tv programmes with a jar of Nutella when I’m home alone…which hasn’t happened since Elsie arrived! I’ve still eaten a few jars of Nutella though during that time…! x

I’m in exactly the same boat as you and rarely have time at home to myself, when I do it feels so strange that I never know what to do! I end up walking from room to room thinking how I should make the most of it then end up sitting on the sofa for the entire time! x

I listen to Radio 4, and enjoy it more than I probably should! And I sweep the floor whilst I’m on conference calls. And talk to the dog!

Yesterday evening I had an unexpected hour when the children were at a party and I didn’t need to work. I sat in a comfy chair, poured a little glass of red and read Stylist magazine from cover to cover. It was BLISSFUL. x

Oh this sounds like bliss! I LOVE being in the house on my own just to be able to enjoy the peace. I think the noise when we have everyone here can be really overwhelming and it must be the same for you. Enjoy it (sounds like you are!) x
