6 Hazards Around Your Home to Watch Out For With Kids

We all like to think of our homes as a safe haven, away from the dangers of the outside world. What we often neglect, however, is the small hazards that are lying around in the most obvious of places.

Car accidents and personal injuries at the office are common in every location, but did you know that accidents around the house are right near the top of the list as well. Let’s take a look at some that might be prevalent around your family abode and ways to get rid of them.

Sharp Objects

This one might seem obvious, but cuts are a prevalent injury. We all try hard to cover sharp table edges when we have little ones, but sometimes we might forget the drawer with sharp objects. You either need to keep these objects out of reach or find a way to secure the drawers and cupboards from small hands.

Choking Hazards

You’ll likely have been told that small toys like Lego are not suitable for little toddlers. If they have older siblings, you need to keep an eye on what the younger kids can get their hands on. You also need to be careful when it comes to food. Apples and grapes are especially troublesome for small mouths and throats, so make sure they’re cut up well.

Doors

This one often gets overlooked. When a child gets their fingers trapped in a door, the whole neighborhood is going to know about it. This hazard can be easily solved with door wedges or stops, but you need to make sure they are secure enough for the toddlers not to move them out the way.

Chemicals

Again, these need to be well stored in a secure place. Bottles may look like a tasty refreshment for little ones, but it could be extremely dangerous if they swallow just a tiny bit. We recommend a tightly sealed box for these items inside of another cupboard. It’ll be too much of a labyrinth for them even to try.

Electrical Outlets and Cables

These are some of the most dangerous hazards apparent in our homes. There are many gadgets available nowadays to cover your outlets and keep kids safe. We also suggest that all cables behind the TV, computer, or wherever they may be, are securely tied together and don’t look like a plate of spaghetti!

Playful Pets

Well, any pets really. Small children tend to poke and prod at animals. Even the calmest of our furry friends can get to a point where they’ve had enough and lash out. On the other end of the spectrum, a large playful dog might get over-excited and cause harm. Pets and children can make a great pair, as long as they are being supervised.

Make Your Home a Safe Haven

By implementing these measures, as well as any you already have in place, your little ones will be much safer. You can expect less chance of ending up in the emergency room and enjoy time at home instead of wondering if the kids are ok.
