Three Books for toddlers with good life lessons

I’m forever grateful that my kiddos love stories as much as I do. There’s nothing quite like getting lost in a book, and I love sitting down and reading stories with the kiddos. Ever since they were babies, I have read to them – I still read aloud to the middle two for our monthly book club book.

While his sisters often read to him, I try and make time every day to read my Beastie Boy a book or two. Our usual picks are Miffy and Spot books for bedtime {or anything by Julia Donaldson!}. Here are three other books that we’ve been loving lately, all of which have good lessons to learn and talk about. They’re not all new, but just favourites – two of which I used to read to the girls as well.

Stone Soup

First published in 1947, this book is still as good today! A story about three hungry soldiers who outwit the greedy inhabitants of a village into providing them with a feast, is based on an old French tale. It’s a great story to read together and discuss the concept of sharing!

Bog Baby

I have to say, this book is one of my favourites. I borrowed it from the library once when Baya was little, and loved it so much I had to buy our own copy. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story – about two sisters who find a bog baby and take him home, but realise he’s a wild thing and cannot live in captivity, teaches an important lesson about if you really love something, sometimes you have to let it go.

Cyril and Pat

I love Emily Garret’s new book so much! About a lonely squirrel called Cyril, who is the only squirrel in the park until he meets Pat – who he thinks is a squirrel like him, and not a rat! It’s a rich, rhyming story that ultimately teaches us that some things are more important than being the same, or listening to others.
