This Homeschooling Life #14

September didn’t go at all to plan. We started off great, went ‘not back to school’ and were all excited for new projects. The first week was great, and then life kinda went a bit upside down and all our plans went wrong. It’s been a case of ‘do what you can’. Thankfully, the girls are big enough to get one with stuff if I’m not able to help out. They’ve kept themselves busy, with some of their courses {mainly Lola}, we’ve managed some maths and some reading {times like this I love programmes like Reading Eggs as they can do it all by themselves}. We’ve had a couple of much-needed playdates with friends, been to a seasonal apple festival, managed a few nature walks, baked lots, painted some bookmark and watched a few nature documentaries.

I’m always grateful at times like this, that sit-down, formal learning, isn’t actually a necessity. The kids have still learnt so much, even when plans don’t work out. We’re in the middle of some big life changes here, more of which soon! I also realised I haven’t shared our curriculum/topic choices for the year – so will get on that next week.

Last week, we also had the first meet of our new home ed book group. Our first book was ‘El Deafo‘ – an autobiography that chronicles the author’s hearing loss at a young age and her subsequent experiences with a powerful and very awkward hearing aid called the Phonic Ear. We LOVED this book, it was a fantastic book – so inspiring and full of warmth. For their book group, the girls each made something inspired by the book – Baya made a poster, Kiki made a mini zine and Lola made a craft from in the book – a bag full of ‘fuzzies’ {you’ll have to read to figure out what they are!!}. You can join in the book club online at NurtureStore.

I’m hoping to get back on track with our plans this week, and keeping my fingers crossed October is better than September! Would love to read your home educating posts, link up below!
