Real World Parenting Awards

Becoming a parent for the very first time is a hugely daunting prospect. No matter how many books you read, friends you talk to , or baby classes you take, nothing really can prepare you for the reality of being fully responsible 24/7 for another human being.

Unfortunately, babies don’t come equipped with an instruction manual, and you have to do a lot of guess work and a lot of making it up as you go along! It’s truly a baptism by fire! I remember arriving home from the hospital with a newborn Lola. Fast asleep in her car seat, we sat on the sofa, stared at here and said ‘now what?!’. Thrown in at the deep end, you soon find your way and figure it all out. Those first few months are the toughest, but thankfully there are some fantastic GP’s, Midwifes and Health Visitors out there, who support new mums while they find their feet and offer support and advice.

The Real World Parenting Awards have just been launched, with two separate categories: one for health professionals, which has been developed by the Primary Care Society for Gastroenterology, and one for supportive family and friends. Both awards are supported by an educational grant from Infacol. The health professional category will recognise the dedication, compassion and hard work of health professionals across the UK. From advising on trouble with latching, helping through the tough times of colic or supporting new parents through mental health issues, they really are an invaluable resource to mums and dads across the UK.

The second category is for family and friends, and will highlight just how important listening and providing love and encouragement is to new mums.

“Having a baby is a life-changing experience and an incredible one, but it can be stressful,” says Dr. Hilary Jones, who will be part of the judging panel. “If you’re lucky enough to have a wonderful family around you, or great friends, it can make a huge difference.”

The Real World Parenting Awards are open to nominations from appreciative parents, colleagues or the individuals themselves. The entry criteria are simple: an individual who has demonstrated the ability to go above and beyond. Just provide their name, workplace (if nominating a health professional) and why you want to nominate them by emailing [email protected]. The closing date for nominations is August 31st.

The winning health professional will receive an educational grant of £1000 from the PCSG to further their career or chosen area of research. Those who nominate their superstar health professional will also be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a short break at Knoll House, Britain’s original family friendly hotel.
