My Awesome Autumn Style Advice

Apparently, it’s summer, but you wouldn’t know it. We’re having a lot more rain than sunshine, but at least it’s given me a chance to think ahead to autumn. Not that I’m in any hurry for it to arrive. However, it’s always fun to think about what you’re going to wear for a new season. When autumn comes, it will be time to put some of the summer clothes away and start dressing a little warmer. Although, I’m already doing that to some extent, so there might not be much of a change. Here’s my guide to autumn style, so you can stay warm and cosy while looking great.

Autumn Colours

I like to get colourful now and then, so naturally I have to think about what colours are best for autumn. A lot of people recommend earthy shades to go with the changing leaves and trees outside. I agree that neutral colours such as brown look great for the season, but I think you need a splash of brighter hues too. You can start off with some more subtle shades and then add to it with bright accessories or patterns. Autumn is the perfect time to accessorise with a colourful scarf or a leather bag like the ones from the Shinola collections.

Layering

When the weather gets cooler later in the year (or earlier, as the case may be) it’s the perfect time for layering. I love wearing different layers because you can take several simple pieces and make them more attractive. But it’s easy to get it wrong if you pile too many things on top of each other at once. You have to be careful combining too many textures, colours and thicknesses. Start off with a basic, thin top, or perhaps too. Then add a jumper or cardigan for extra warmth, and maybe a coat or jacket, depending how cold it is.

Practical Shoes

Unfortunately, when it starts to rain a lot more, you have to put your sandals away. It’s time to get out some slightly more practical shoes for both me and the kids. But mostly the involves switching to closed toes and something that’s at least a bit waterproof. The kids might be happy in wellies, but I’d rather have something a bit smarter sometimes. A great pair of autumn boots is the perfect solution for both stylish and practical shoes. Ideal for wearing in the rain, and it means we can go on adventures without getting wet feet.

A Big Bag

If there’s one thing you need for autumn, it’s a large bag. It can be a weird time when the temperature can change quickly. You never know when it might right, so you need to carry an umbrella or raincoat. A bag gives you somewhere to put your rain gear, as well as any extra layers you take off if it gets too warm. You could use a large handbag, but if you have kids, a backpack is sometimes a lot more practical.

Warmer weather is better, but autumn’s arrival won’t stop us getting out and about. I just need to make sure I’m dressed for the occasion.
