An eat-in kitchen

One thing I’ve wanted in a house for a long time is a kitchen/diner. We don’t have big, formal dinners, so having a table in the kitchen makes far more sense for the way our family works. It means that the kitchen is the heart of our home. It’s where we gather, to work, to play, to eat and to chat.

I’ve noticed such a difference in these past few weeks in the new house, especially with having Vega. Before, I’d have to leave him in another room if I was cooking, or baking or cleaning up. Now, he can be in the room with me which means it’s easier to get on as he’s happy and I can keep him entertained!

As the kiddos are homeschooled, we often find ourselves gathered around the table. There may be someone working on a science experiment, someone else painting and someone doing some sums. I can help out and supervise them and cook lunch at the same time {whilst watching the baby. phew}

In a family home, the kitchen really is the hub of life. It’s important to plan out exactly what you want and need from your kitchen before you even think about choosing a new fitted kitchen. Wren Kitchens have a great dream kitchen planner that lets you design your perfect kitchen online. If you don’t have space for a table, how about a small island where you can all gather around? You could incorporate some extra storage space into it too – I don’t think you can ever have enough kitchen cupboards!

We spend more time in the kitchen now that there is space for all six of us to gather. The kiddos can come in and help with the food prep, or tell me stories about their day while I’m cooking our dinner. When we’ve had guests around for a meal, it’s meant that I have been able to join in the conversations rather than be stuck in the kitchen alone missing out on the fun!
