#ARWOMAN – Let’s celebrate women
I had an email last week from Atterley
I started thinking about who my #ARWOMAN would be….. I began mentally making a list, and very soon it grew long. There are so many women who have inspired me in some way… from my own Mama and my big sister. Women such as Linda McCartney who have used the fame they have to highlight important issues. Women such as Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst who fought so hard for the freedom we have today. Movie stars like Katherine Hepburn who stuck to her guns and wasn’t just another simpering blonde bombshell.
Closer to home, there are the amazing women I consider to be my friends today. Ladies I know in the flesh, and some wonderful women I have the honour of calling my friend even though we haven’t met in person. THere are some amazing bloggers who inspire me with their words every day.
As my list grew, I wondered if I could ever narrow it down. And in all reality they are all my #ARWOMAN… but then my thoughts turned to the musicians who have inspired me. Since I was a 12, music has always been a huge inspiration to me. My teens were turbulent years, {like they are for many} and in those times when I felt lost music was always there for me.
Ladies such as Joni Mitchell, Debbie Harry, even Courtney Love {in my riot grrl times!}. One lady who often provided the soundtrack to my life was Carole King. Tapestry was one album that I always returned to, whatever was going on in my life, there were many long nights sat listening to her voice, surrounded by cigarette smoke, my lava lamp lighting the room, her words washed over me. That iconic album cover always spoke volumes to me… I’ve always had a longing to have been in San Fransisco at the height of the hippy movement and her barefooted, casually dressed photo embodies the 70s – dressing for herself and not to male imperatives, free to be herself, be honest to her emotions and pursue her own life. At times when I could see no light at the end of my tunnel, she reminded me that I simply had to be myself.
Who would be your #ARWOMAN? If you want to take part, post a picture of the woman who inspires you on Instagram, tagging @AtterleyRoad and using #ARWOMAN tag and nominate some Instagram friends to do the same.

February 24, 2015 at 11:21This is such an important campaign as there are so many amazing women who go uncelebrated. When we think of important figures throughout history for example – scientists, explorers, politicians – it’s mainly men who get featured. Bring on the girls!
