The Importance of Clean Water

water5425h

One of the things that I love most about home-schooling, is that we can go off and research a topic as and when it comes up. If one of the girls asks me a question, or we see something that catches our interest, then that is what we’ll be studying.

Recently, Lola and I got into a conversation about water. We started talking about why we use a water filter for water that we drink or cook with. We got into a discussion on the benefits of drinking filtered water and then about clean water, and how lucky we are to have it.

For my kids, like so many others growing up in the western world, we take our water for granted. We know that we can turn on a tap and have as much clean, safe water as we want. We can wash our pots, cook our meals, wash our clothes and our bodies without so much as a second thought to how much water we are using.

We began talking about the importance of water to us – how nothing on earth can live without access to water, yet 768 million people in the world do not have access to clean water. How for some, water is a precious commodity, instead of something that they take for granted.

I think it’s vital that our children understand just how lucky we are. That for so many children in the world, they do not have access to clean running water. That they may have to walk six km every day to collect water for their family. That the water they do collect may still not be clean, may still be full of diseases that kill. That every 20 seconds, a child dies from a water related disease.

The charity ‘Just a Drop‘ are on a mission to reduce child mortality by delivering accessible, clean, safe water where it is needed most. They support communities through the construction of wells, boreholes, pipelines, hand pumps and latrines. They are also establishing health and sanitation programmes for some of the poorest and remotest regions in the world. They are a hands on charity, delivering clean water, safe sanitation and also hygiene education.
