According to MSN, a study by cheese and bacon producer Denhay Farms revealed that food makes up our three most cherished and easily remembered childhood memories. It discovered that above everything else, whether people, places or languages spoken, food always comes top. With this in mind, here are some popular puddings that are bound to bring back those childhood memories. Which one’s your favourite?

Bread and Butter Pudding
Perfect on a cold winter’s day, bread and butter pudding is an old-fashioned English family favourite that is cheap and easy to make. It is made by layering slices of buttered bread with scattered raisins and adding an egg and cream mixture to combine. If it appealed to you as a child, you’ll love it even more when you add a liqueur – visit www.creamchargersdirect.co.uk for more information.

Batternberg Cake
Apparently created for the marriage of Queen Victoria’s granddaughter to Prince Louis of Battenberg, this beautiful cake remains a traditional afternoon tea treat. Made up of chequerboard squares of pink and yellow sponge and bright yellow marzipan icing, this was always the most eye-catching cake and brings back fond memories of childhood tea parties.

Jam Roly-Poly
Jam Roly-Poly is up there with one of the most favourite British childhood desserts. Believed to date back to the early 19th century, jam roly-poly is a pudding made from suet dough that is spread with jam, rolled up and then baked before being served with custard or ice cream. Often a glorious Sunday treat, this sweet pudding is bound to take you on that trip down memory lane.

Angel Delight
This super simple but tasty dessert evokes wonderful childhood memories for many of us. The instant powdered pudding mix is whisked with milk and then chilled to create a mousse-like sweet dessert. What child could forget the experience of whipping up an Angel Delight and then licking the bowl completely clean?

Rice Pudding
After an afternoon playing with your friends in the garden, a bowl of rice pudding waiting for you on the table was a comforting sight to say the least. The dish, made from rice, sugar and milk or water, can be mixed with a number of ingredients including cinnamon, dried fruit and jam, and is still enjoyed today all over the world.

According to The Scotsman, a recent report by Mintel and a number of supermarkets has found that a third of Britons are baking from scratch every week. They also reported that sales of items like food processors, blenders and mixers have risen, as have products such as flour, cake decorating materials and baking utensils. Why not start making some of your favourite childhood desserts?

I never got to have desserts very often as a child so they were a real treat. I remember loving ginger cake and syrup cake, but on extra special occasions we had batternberg. I remember peeling of the marzipan, separating all the squares and eating them all individually so it felt like I had 5 (4 squares and a marzipan snowman!) desserts!

Nice bit of nostalgia there! :)
