DIY: Lemon and Lavender Household Cleaner

After having workmen in last week, and decorating the girls bedrooms, my house is a little bit of a tip! We had to empty one bedroom entirely so that the workmen could get to the ceiling, meaning there has been boxes and bags full of stuff all over the house.

The work is finally done, and the painting finished. I took the opportunity of empty rooms to have a deep clean, washed all the woodwork and doors down. Now comes time to put everything back into the rooms {declutter time I think?!} The girls bedrooms look so much better, and as soon as they’re back together I’ll share some photos.

I tend to avoid commercial, chemical laden cleaners and eco-friendly alternatives can get pretty costly. It’s easy and inexpensive to make your own. Not to mention safer for your family AND for the environment. This is the recipe that I make up and use to clean everywhere – {except on granite//marble} – for dusting, for wiping down kitchen surfaces, for cleaning glass, tables, bathrooms and appliances – one cleaner will be all you need!

You will need:
Mason jar or similar
Lemon peels {I used leftover lemon peels from making a lemon cake}
1 cup lavender
White vinegar

Simply add your peels to the jar, at least 4 lemons worth, more is better! Next pour in the lavender and then cover over with white vinegar, leaving ½ an inch at the top of the jar. Leave it to infuse for a couple of weeks, giving it a little shake once a week. Strain and decant it into a spray bottle.

That simple, and the bonus is it smells really lovely also! Sometimes I mix it up and add in orange peels if that is what I have around – still smells good and cleans just as well!

    This is exactly what I do, although I’ve never added the lavender before! I must try it; I bet it smells amazing. I generally tend to add in orange peels as well. I also add 10 or so drops of tea tree oil since it acts as an antibacterial/disinfectant – good in case raw meat touches a counter.

    Hi, Polly! Thanks a lot for your recipe. At first I thought “it doesn’t look very good” but it actually works great. Thanks for sharing and helping me learn and improve my cleaning :)
