Camping With Kids: Here’s What They Don’t Tell You
If you’re new to camping with children, the chances are high that you feel your first family camping adventure will go off without a hitch. Sadly, that’s not always the case.
As you probably know, young children can sometimes be hard to please, and a long road trip can result in all kinds of meltdowns – irrespective of how much food, drink, and technology you give them during the journey!
Before you embark on your first family camping trip, it makes sense to learn about the things other parents will never tell you about camping with children. Here’s what you need to know:
Tents Aren’t For All Kids
You need to bear in mind that tents might seem like awesome adventure ideas for young children, but they aren’t a good idea for all kids. Some children will absolutely hate sleeping in a tent, especially if that’s for several nights.
Consider doing a trial run by setting up a tent in your garden and sleeping in it with your kids for one night. If they hate sleeping in a tent, consider alternatives like off road caravans and campervans.
They Need Lots Of Food
When you go on a long car journey with your offspring, have you noticed that they always seem hungry? That’s why you intuitively pack a “goodie bag” with snacks, sandwiches, and other items for them to eat.
You’ll need to do the same when you go camping, plus you’ll need a large cache of food for the duration of your stay in the great outdoors. Of course, that isn’t so much of a worry if you’re staying at a campsite with restaurants and food shops.
They Need Lots Of Clothes
Children love to explore and, as a result, they’ll often come home with muddy and dirty clothes. When you go camping with your kids, you can’t expect them to wear one set of clothes each day as most adults would do.
You’ll need to bring virtually their entire wardrobe with you so that you’re prepared for any situations that require a change of clothing. Expect young children to need a change of clothing at least twice a day.
Parents Need To Work As A Team
When you go camping as a family unit, the only way to have a fun and successful time is when both parents work together as a team.
That way, you can do things like sharing tasks and take turns looking after the kids when one person has to go for a shower or is busy preparing a meal for everyone.
If you’re a single parent going away on a family camping holiday, get your kids involved by helping to set places for dinner or asking them to help each other get dressed in the morning.
Conclusion
Camping is undoubtedly a fun experience enjoyed by many families each year. It’s a fantastic way for family members to bond with each other, and it’s a perfect way to make memories.
Doing some preparation and working together will ensure each experience won’t be memorable for the wrong reasons!
