5 ways to get yourself out of a rut

Lately, I’ve felt like I’m stuck in a rut. When life starts to take on that ‘Groundhog Day’ feeling, I know that I need to do something. Life at the minute is stressful, newly out of a crazy controlling/abusive relationship, pregnant, ridiculously broke after said relationship, single parenting four kiddos, working…. it’s no wonder I feel stressed out, depressed and anxious.

The everyday mundane tasks keep me occupied, there is always something that has to be done, so sitting and feeling sorry for myself isn’t really an option. Yet still… I’ve been feeling super sick of myself, super sick of the same old, same old and aware that I’m just sitting and letting life pass me by.

Here are five great ways to help get unstuck;

1| BEGIN SMALL

one of the problems with being tuck in a rut, is that it can be hard to know where to start to get unstuck. Looking at the whole situation, it can be overwhelming and it’s easy to think we’ll be in this rut forever. I’ve found that making small changes is the best way. Pick one {small} thing that you can change that will make your life better this week.

2| GET OUT OF TOWN

That old saying ‘a change is as good as a rest’ is oh so true. Getting out of our day to day routine is a great way to get some perspective on the rut we’re in. Whether it’s a few days away, a day trip or even just an afternoon at a friends house {different four walls to stare at!}, shake it up a little.

3| DO WHAT YOU LOVE

When I’m feeling like this, I usually realise that I’ve let go of the things that make me feel good. I realised that my low mood over the past few weeks has meant I’ve not being doing the yoga that makes me feel so good, it’s also stopped me being creative or social. What things did you use to do that made you feel good? Try adding one or more of them back into your daily life.

4| GET INSPIRED

I love to look up to people who inspire me when I’m feeling stuck in a rut. The people that I admire are the ones who keep on challenging themselves, who push forwards regardless of adversity and always believe in themselves. Reading inspiring books, listening to podcasts, following only inspiring folk on Instagram are all ways I can surround myself daily with a little inspiration.

5| REACH OUT

Don’t think you have to get unstuck all by yourself. Talk to friends and family about how you’re feeling, and what you are trying to do to remedy it. Talking always helps lift the unease of my shoulders, and you might just find someone else has a great idea that could really help!
