Staying in Wales during the Eisteddfod

In just over two months time, it will be the National Eisteddfod again. In Welsh Culture, an Eisteddfod is a Welsh festival of literature, music, and performance. it is held at the beginning of August each year, alternating between North and South Wales. It is a celebration of the culture and language in Wales. It takes place over eight days and is considered the largest music and poetry festival in Europe.

Around 6,000 people take part in the Eisteddfod every year, with over 160,000 people attending to watch! It is a popular event, that always has a fantastic turnout and is a major part of Welsh Culture. The festival offers something for everyone, and while you don’t have to be a Welsh speaker to enjoy the Eisteddfod, you’ll never get a better chance to learn and practice a few phrases from the beautiful Welsh language. The Eisteddfod is the place to see native speakers at their finest, with competitions ranging from acting and presentations to solo singers and large choirs, poetry, and prose, all delivered in fluent Welsh.

The Science and Technology Pavilion is always popular with kids, with experiments, demonstrations and fun and games with a keen eye on taking learning out of the classroom in style. The S4C and BBC Cymru/Wales stands to hold daily shows for children, which include appearances by their favorite TV characters, and with dance, music and performance tents carry on well into the evening, as well as some fantastic food and drinks, it is an event you won’t want to miss.

With so many people attending the festival each year, if you are thinking of going, it is a good idea to organise your accommodation sooner rather than later, as places fill up fast! While there are plenty of hotels and B&B’s close to the festival, that you could book into, if you are looking for self-catering accommodation, then there is a fantastic selection of cottages in Wales that you could rent for the duration of the festival.

Hiring a cottage is the perfect way of having a relaxing holiday whilst enjoying the Eisteddfod – you could even extend your stay after the festival, and use the cottage as a base for exploring some of the local area. Cottages are also the perfect place to stay in if you are traveling in a larger group – allowing you all to stay in one place together. Many of the cottages also allow you to take your pets with you – so you don’t have to leave your dog at home, and you can both enjoy some long walks in the beautiful Welsh countryside.

You can pick a cottage in a city, or further out into the countryside – even selecting features such as wi-fi or a hot tub – letting you create your ideal holiday. So if you are planning on visiting the Eisteddfod this year, whether for one day or all eight, renting out a cottage is the ideal way of having a home-from-home base to stay in.

When I was at school our choir and singers used to compete at the Eisteddfod every year. I loved it! I’ll never forget singing solo in a competition one year and the fire alarm going off. I carried on singing and didn’t win, but got commended for holding my pitch throughout!
