Slimming Down Your Wardrobe to Avoid Clutter in the Future

People often collect clothes as they grow older because they always need to buy new stuff. Throwing out clothes often feels bad unless it’s completely unwearable, and our wardrobes are kind of big enough to just fit many years’ worth of clothing, even if we don’t wear them. Let’s face it, we’ve probably all got some items of clothing that have been sitting in our wardrobe for ages, never to be worn or even seen again!

But if you try to declutter your home or even move to a new one, you’ll probably realize that you have too many clothes. So here’s our quick guide on how to slim down your wardrobe and avoid that future clutter.

Get a smaller wardrobe or place to store clothes

Forcing yourself to fit all of your clothes into something smaller can be a great start. Too many of us have large wardrobes and cupboards that are just full of different items of clothing, and a lot of it we don’t even wear.

So why not introduce something like clothes poles or open wardrobes that deliberately have less storage space? Not only does it make it easier to see your clothes at a glance so you can pick out something to wear, but it also looks more aesthetically pleasing than just having a big old wardrobe with all your stuff in it. If you only have a limited amount of clothing space, you’ll be more mindful about what you buy!

Sell your old clothes for a bit of money

If you find yourself buying clothes all the time then not only does your storage space suffer, but so does your wallet! Thankfully, it’s easy to make back some of the money by just selling your clothes.

You can do this by selling off your clothes in bulk for scraps and materials, or you can do it the modern way with online apps like Depop and eBay. You just take a few pictures of your clothes, list them for a price, and then people buy them. You get the money in the account of your choice, and you send the buyer their stuff. It’s as easy as that!

Of course, don’t expect to quickly clear out your entire wardrobe in a few days. Some items probably won’t sell for weeks or possibly even months. You also need to price things reasonably! But with a bit of practice, it’s fairly easy to sell your stuff for some extra money.

Try seasonal wardrobe changes

It’s common for us to wear different kinds of clothes during different seasons. For winter we wear thicker and more comfortable clothes, and for summer we wear lighter garments.

So why not switch out your wardrobe? Store clothes away when they’re not needed and take out other clothes when you do. This will help keep your wardrobe fairly slim and it also means you can keep the majority of your clothes.

While you’ll still need some form of clothing storage, that shouldn’t be an issue if you’ve already got quite a lot of clutter.
