Redecorating On A Budget – 5 Tips To Save You Money

Whether you are looking to redecorate your bedroom or give your home office a refresh, decorating costs can certainly mount up. Check out my tips below to make sure you home looks gorgeous and your wallet doesn’t take too much of a bashing.

Style And Accessories First

Ok, this might sound a bit backward but i haven’t gone crazy and but believe me its works. How many time have you, though, ‘oh I love the piece, but it just wouldn’t go in my house’. Well, maybe that’s because you are picking the wrong style to begin with. It’s easy to be influenced by all the decorating trends out there, and your own style can get lost.  By building your room design around the items you want in the room, you can get a sense of the style, colour, and space that are needed before you decorate. It also means you can buy a few select pieces that you really love. This is much better use of your cash that paying out for furniture that you are lukewarm about, just because it fits in your room.

For example, if you have a super modern minimalist sofa, then you probably aren’t going to want to chintz wallpapers and chandeliers. If crystal chandeliers are more your thing, why not go for a maximalist look? Popularised by Juan Pablo Molyneux, the maximalist look is all about luxurious fabrics and opulent designs. By buying your accessories first and sticking to quality over quantity motto, you can achieve a scaled down version of this look on a budget.

Painting

You know what I’m going to say here right? Yep to save some money you’re going to have to do the painting yourself. Grab some Frog Tape and a roller and get stuck in. With the cost of a professional painter and decorator at around £300-£400 per room, you will save yourself a fortune!

Preloved

Luckily it is very fashionable and totally acceptable to buy preloved and vintage prices for your home right now. This is a great way of getting some quirky style without paying through the nose. Try car boots sales, online auctions and ask friends and family too. Remember you can cheaply alter any vintage finds, by painting them with chalk paint. This is a great way of getting your individual style into your home for a reasonable price.

Make it

If you have seen a beautiful decorative or fabric item, but it’s a bit out of your price range, why not have a go at making something similar yourself? You’d be surprised what you can achieve when you put your mind to it, and you might just have fun as well. They only caveat I have here is make sure that you don’t directly copy another artist’s design. Remember they make their living from their work and have likely put a lot of time and effort into their piece. It is, therefore, respectful to not make a direct copy, even if you aren’t planning on selling your items.
