A Quick Guide to a Complete Home Renovation

To get on the property market, many people are looking to invest in properties that need some work. OK, quite a lot of work! Buying an older home, or one that hasn’t been updated in awhile can be a good investment as you can negotiate a better price on it. It also means that you have a blank canvas to start the work from; you can create your ideal home. There are a few downsides, though. You might decide to live elsewhere until it has been renovated. If you are living in it while it is being renovated, it might be a big upheaval for a few months. You need to have some money in the budget for the renovations too. So the house price might be a relative bargain. But if you can’t afford to renovate, it would just be a waste and a bad investment.

If you have chosen a home and all of the calculations add up, where do you start? The big things to do are to get wallpaper stripped off the walls. Then when you have the ‘bare bones’ of the home, you can make the changes you will need to. Plumbing and electrics are the best to do at this point. So make sure you have a plumber handy of you don’t know how to do those things. You might need new radiators, boiler or heating system if the house is old. Then the electrics should be done. If you have bought a house that hasn’t been updated in a long time, the chances are you will need a full rewire. This can be tricky and complex if you don’t know what you are doing. There are certain requirements that the electrics at home have to comply with. So someone like JNB electrical contractors would be able to give guidance on that. You don’t want to get that kind of thing wrong!

If you have had to chisel into walls to install new wiring or insulation, then getting the walls replastered is a good idea. If they are in good shape, other than the new grooves, then you could just fill the holes that have been made. From there, you can get decorating! If you are living in the home, think about doing a room at a time. Then you can carry on with things as normal. If you attempt to do the whole house at once, it will get overwhelming.

If you are painting the walls, then it is a good idea to do that before having flooring fitted. You don’t want new tiles or carpet to get any splashes of paint on it. No matter how careful you are, some flicks of paint always get on the floor! So think about the walls before flooring. Then the fun part of styling the home comes in. Think accessories, curtains and furniture and what will look good together. It can be a long process when you renovate a house. But it can be so worth it.
