7 things 20-somethings can buy to transform a tiny apartment

Your twenties are like no other decade in your life. You’re old enough to be considered a grown-up, but at the same time probably aren’t tied down by the obligations that older people face. You’re as free as you’ll ever be, and you’re practically drowning in possibilities for the future.

On the other hand, there’s also a high chance you’re struggling to come to terms with having to pay off student loans and are living in a tiny apartment. But nobody said 1 bed apartments couldn’t look fantastic. Here are seven things 20-somethings can use to transform the look of even the tiniest of apartments.

Designer rug

If you invest in only one quality piece, a designer rug is a fantastic choice. Even in a tiny apartment, floor space can be considerable, and the colour and timbre of your flooring can drastically affect the mood of your interior. An interior with neutral colours or bright whites can make a small apartment look more spacious, and beautiful designer rugs can make even the most modest of spaces look refined. TheLongestStay.com has some chic rugs in compact sizes.

Bedspread

Your bed is a refuge from the stress of everyday life, and in small apartments beds take up valuable real estate. Choose the colours and patterns on your sheets and comforter carefully, as they can set the mood for the entire bedroom. If you are decorating with lots of whites, your bedsheets can add an unexpected pop of colour.

Candles

Give even the most modest apartment a touch of luxury by littering beautiful candles all over the apartment. I like to place candles on the side table by the bed as well as in the bathroom. The great thing about candles is that despite being inexpensive they make you feel pampered—-just looking at them relaxes you!

Mirror

I cannot understate the power mirrors have to enlarge a small space. If your tiny apartment is in danger of looking cramped, hang a well-chosen mirror on the wall and you’ll be surprised to find your space immediately looks bigger.

Plants

When you don’t have much room at home, the proximity of the four walls of your apartment to each other can make you feel a little boxed in. Place plants in empty corners to soften them, or on windowsills to beautify your view of the outside world.

Wall art

The art on your walls can say a lot about your personality and turn a nondescript space into one that makes you feel right at home and reminds you of the people and things you love. So don’t leave those walls bare. If your apartment is really small, avoid large pieces that swallow up all available space. Instead, opt for smaller prints and photographs in punchy colours and patterns.

Compact or multitasking furniture

Less is more in a tiny apartment, so buying a piece of furniture for each conceivable purpose is not a good idea. Instead, focus on finding ultra compact furniture or pieces that multitask. A sofa that folds out into a spare bed, a bed that folds up into the wall or a coffee table that doubles as a laptop desk are all examples of furniture pieces that save space.

Mirrors are almost magical. In my previous studio apartment, I had mirrors placed in such a way that it look quite spacious. Too bad I had to leave it :(
