How well can your baby see?

Until I first became pregnant and started reading every baby book I could get my hands on, it had never occurred to me that babies weren’t born with fully developed eyesight. I guess it’s not the sort of thing you think about when you’re 21 unless you have or are expecting a baby! I was fascinated to find out that a newborn can only see in shades of grey, or that they can only focus on things really close to them.

Over the years, raising four kids, it’s been interesting to watch them grow and develop and see their eyesight change too – it’s lovely when you realise they’ve noticed the toys hanging over them, or can see Daddy coming from across the room.

Vision Direct have developed a tool that shows how a baby’s eyesight changes over their first year of life. It has been created and researched by expert opticians, and features a simple sliding scale to show the developmental stages of a baby’s eyesight. You simply enter your baby’s age and the tool gives you an idea of what your baby’s field of vision, depth perception and colour awareness may be like right now. It also offers a few tips that can help healthy eyesight development.

I had fun playing with it, and seeing through a baby’s eyes as they grow. You can see the baby sight tool here and have a play with it for yourself.
