7 Tips for Putting Your Stuff into Storage

When you have kids, you find yourself with so much stuff. Sometimes I think to myself that I don’t even know where half of it came from. When the house is in a mess, and there is no more space for anything else, it can end up driving you a bit mad after a while.  If you are at this point, I would say it is definitely time to put some stuff away in storage. Here are my tips on how to approach putting your stuff into storage.

1.Declutter first

Before you even start to think about putting anything away in storage, you should try to declutter your house first. You don’t want to pay to put things away that you won’t ever use, so get rid of them! Sort through your whole house and put aside things you no longer use. You can either give them away to charity, or sell them through eBay or a car boot sale. If you sell them, you may even make enough money to cover the cost of a storage unit anyway!

2.Can you put stuff in the garage?

If you have free storage space at home, be sure to use it. Can you squeeze anything else into the garage or the attic? If you are taking the time to declutter the house, why not do the same to those areas too. Once they have been cleared you can start again at repacking.

  1. If you need to go for a storage unit, get the right size

So the attic is full to burst? A space maker is the next best thing. However, most people will rush in and opt for the largest size they can find. Don’t fall into this trap. Now that you have decluttered your home, and put everything away as much as you can into those freed-up spaces, it is time to estimate how much stuff you have left. You can then make a guess at the size your storage unit needs to be to fit everything. You don’t want to pay for a unit that is too large, so make sure you plan carefully to get something that suits your needs.

4.Get the right type of packaging

If you are putting your stuff away into the garage, or even a storage unit, buy cardboard boxes and bubble wrap to protect your stuff. If you are going to store delicate things be sure to wrap them carefully in the protective bubble wrap. You never know when your stuff might decide to take a tumble. Packaging will also help to protect from dust and any treacherous creepy crawlies that might be lurking around.

5.Label your boxes

So you have packed everything away, but now you don’t know where any of it is! Nothing is more frustrating than having to hunt down that one important item. Make sure you label your boxes so if you do need to get anything out, you can do so without too much stress.

  1. Maximise your storage space

If you loved playing Tetris, think of packing your stuff away as a real life Tetris. Fit those oddly shaped boxes into holes that compliment them and make the most of the space you have.

7.Make sure you can get in

It is all good and well to pack everything in, but if you need to get in and reach the boxes at the back, can you? Make sure you leave a walkway so that you can reach everything you need to reach.

Now with all that spare room you will definitely feel the need to redecorate.
