Creating a bedroom haven

For the first time ever {i think}, our bedroom actually feels like a nice place to be – a hidey hole where I can switch off at bedtime and just chill out. In the past couple of houses we’ve always had to have the cross trainer in our bedroom, as well as cots or beds for little people and various other ‘stuff’ that had no other home.

Our room is mainly all white, a few splashes of colour here and there but it’s light, bright, calm and relaxing. After a crazy day with these four kiddos, I’m always so grateful to collapse into bed each night. Sleep is so important, here a few tips for creating a bedroom haven:

* Buy a new bed ~ The bed really is the most important part of a bedroom {obvs} – a new bed really does make a huge difference to how well you sleep, especially if yours is really old. There are some great double beds if you don’t have kiddos sneaking into yours like I do! I prefer a wooden bed base, I like having the empty space underneath my bed – makes my room feel less cluttered! Although if you’re really short on storage space, a bed with drawers would be perfect!

* Clear the clutter ~ Having loads of junk around won’t help you feel relaxed.. If you can clear anything out of the bedroom that you don’t need in there, and tidy the rest away. Tidy room, tidy mind ;)

*Keep it neutral ~ As a teen, I always opted for brightly coloured walls and bed linen, now I prefer to stick to white walls and calmer coloured linen. Too much colour or pattern stops my mind switching off and me relaxing.

*Bin the clock ~ As I’m still up once or twice in the night feeding the baby, I found myself clock watching – thinking how long I’d been up, or how long until I had to get up. That really stopped me being able to settle and sleep as I was worrying about time. If I can’t see the time, I find I don’t worry about how long I’ve been up with the baby {quite as much!}

*It’s all about the scent ~ If you need a little extra help to unwind, consider making your own sleep spray, a spritz before I climb into bed helps me drift off swiftly. Even just sprinkling a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow can make a big difference.
