Homemade Jam

strawberries

One of my favourite things about summer here is the abundance of fresh fruit we can harvest. Strawberries, plums, raspberries, currants, blackberries. They taste so good warmed by the sun and eaten as soon as they are picked. Harvest season never lasts as long as I like, and come the winter we’re yearning for their taste again. When I have a glut of a particular fruit, I’ll make the excess into jam {I have to be quick, nothing goes uneaten for very long in this house!} Strawberry, plum and blackberry are my favourites to make.

Jam is pretty easy to make, fruit and sugar is all you need. It makes great gifts come Christmas time also! A cupboard full of jams always makes me happy once winter sets in, homemade jam on my porridge is the perfect way to start the day!

You’ll Need:
Sterilised Jam Jars
1 kg fruit {one variety or a mix}
1 kg Jam Sugar
Large Saucepan

Place the fruit into the saucepan and mush up with a potato masher. Add in the sugar and heat over a medium heat. Bring to a boil and simmer for five minutes, stirring all the while.

Turn off the heat and leave to sit for fifteen minutes. Skim off any foam and divide between your sterilised jam jars.

Make some pretty labels and a doily on the top and you have great gifts!

    You make it sound so easy! I have never made Jam before. It’s almost like I’m scared to try or something but think I’m gonna have to just do it!

      Don’t think about it, just give it a go! The worst that will happen is it’s a soft set jam :p I’ve never had too many problems, and if it is a little runny it still goes great on porridge!
