Simple, Joyful Summer Ideas for Kids (That Don’t Involve Screens!)

Summer doesn’t have to be jam-packed or expensive to be memorable. In fact, some of the best childhood moments are slow, spontaneous, and rooted in connection. Whether you’re staying close to home or venturing out a little, here are some gentle, joyful ideas to help you make the most of the summer with your children.

1. Stay Safe & Splash Sensibly

If your plans include time at the pool, beach, or river, spend a few minutes chatting with your child about water safety. The RNLI and Swim England websites offer excellent child-friendly resources, including videos and tips that empower kids to be confident and cautious near water.

2. Join the Summer Reading Challenge

The local library’s Summer Reading Challenge is a brilliant (and completely free) way to keep young minds engaged. This year’s theme is full of imagination and adventure—perfect for little bookworms or reluctant readers alike.

3. Make a Backyard Camp

Pitch a tent, set up a picnic blanket, or build a den with sticks and blankets. Let your children pretend they’re explorers, campfire chefs, or storytellers under the stars. Add fairy lights and a flask of hot chocolate for extra magic.

4. Go on a Nature Safari

Take a notebook, magnifying glass, or camera and head out on a wildlife hunt. Look for butterflies, bugs, birds, or wildflowers. You can even take part in the Big Butterfly Count or RSPB Wild Challenge to turn your day out into a citizen science project.

5. Earn a Blue Peter Badge

Yes, they’re still going strong! Kids can apply for a Blue Peter badge by drawing, writing, crafting, or making a difference in their community. It’s a beautiful way to encourage creativity and kindness—with a real reward at the end.

6. Bring Out the Board Games

Rainy day? Dust off your board games or card decks. Whether it’s classics like Uno or newer co-operative games, playing together builds connection, patience, and shared memories.

7. Bake Together

Let your child lead in the kitchen—even if it’s just cracking eggs or stirring batter. Baking doesn’t have to be fancy. Try making simple scones, fairy cakes, or homemade ice lollies. It’s messy, fun, and delicious.

8. Slow Down & Stargaze

Wrap up in blankets, lie back on a clear evening, and look up. Watch for shooting stars, trace constellations, or just chat about the universe. Slowing down like this can spark the most beautiful conversations.

9. Plan a DIY Adventure Day

Let your child design a “Day of Adventure” with a homemade map and a backpack of essentials. Even a walk to the local park can feel magical when they’re in charge of the route, snacks, and activities.

10. Get Crafty with Nature

Collect leaves, pebbles, petals, or feathers and turn them into beautiful art. Try making nature collages, leaf prints, or fairy houses. These simple crafts connect creativity with the rhythms of the earth.

The Magic is in the Moments
You don’t need a packed itinerary or fancy toys to make summer special. What children remember most are the little things: the freedom to explore, the time spent with you, and the magic you helped them see in the ordinary. What are your favourite ways to spend slow summer days with your children?
