Saying yes to more adventures
I
Tuesday was a lovely sunny day, and given were forecast rain for much of the rest of the week, I dragged everyone out of bed and for a long walk to Erddig – our local National Trust property. It’s a 45 minute walk from home, not too far really but enough sometimes to make me wish we had a car! I really would love to learn to drive as then we could justify having a car and it would mean we could go on more adventures as so much of the Welsh countryside is just not accessible by public transport. Think I may need to win the lottery before I can afford to have driving lessons though!
Anyway, back to Tuesday. I packed up a picnic {and some chocolate to keep us going on the walk ;)} and managed to get everyone up, ready and out of the house early for us {i.e. 10.30am!}. Once we hit the grounds by the river, everyone perked up. Beastie was pleased to see the dogs and birds, and the girls found some stones and sticks to throw into the river. The chocolate was a welcome reward for making it all the way up the hill {mountain climbers we’re not}. One of the kids favourite things about Erddig is the ‘Wolf’s Den’ – a natural, wooden playground – rope swings, logs to walk along, tree trunk stepping stones {and lots of mud}. They had a great time – especially Beastie as it was his first time there when he could walk and really enjoy it!
A picnic in the garden there, spying some baby Moorhens and then a long, muddy walk back home made for an excellent day. It’s amazing how much magic some fresh air and exercise can work. It made me realise that this is just what we need more of. More time outdoors, less time worrying about all the things we ‘should be doing’. More adventures. More just saying YES. While I have to work {and absolutely love what I do} I need to find a way to condense my work time so that we have more free days for fun adventures like this one!

April 7, 2016 at 17:39I’m really not surprised you feel that things get on top of you sometimes Polly – look at all the stuff you do! You’re working, being a mother, wife, teacher – that’s a lot going on there. I always read your posts and think what an amazingly patience and kind person you must be, so don’t be too hard on yourself!

April 8, 2016 at 08:38It was so nice to have some sun on Tues, it was Tiger’s birthday so we went out for the day too. I feel like we’ve hardly been on any adventures for so long, mainly because the weather is still so cold and crap! I hope we have a good summer because I can’t bear much more cold and rain! Lovely photos :) xx

April 8, 2016 at 14:07Thank you for making me realise that I, too, have got caught up in the everyday stuff and keep forgetting to have fun as much as I should with my family. Glad to see you had such a lovely day, and thanks for the inspiration.

April 9, 2016 at 01:49I’ve been feeling a lot like this lately as well – having a baby that doesn’t sleep sure is draining and that usually reflects how the day goes as well as have not been spending as much time outdoors as we usually do – also going to make that more a priority – totally going to say yes to more adventures

April 9, 2016 at 21:18Love this Polly and that pic of the baby coots is just adorable (as of course are your babies!) I have NO idea how you manage to fit in home schooling and working and FOUR kids. I’ve got two and that’s literally ALL I can manage ;) Yes to adventures from us, too. Although we do spend a lot of time outside this endless rain got to us this winter and for most of the beginning of the year it was REALLY hard work getting my children outside. Now it’s slightly (only slightly) more clement they are much more into going out and it makes such a difference to my mood and general sense of wellbeing. It also just melts away all their squabbling and bickering. xx
