Dressing with warmth and style for winter weddings

Struggling to decide how to dress for a wedding this season? Follow this guide to discover how to stay warm with style!

Choose your fabric carefully

One of the main differences between winter- and summer-weight clothes is the fabrics used. When temperatures are high, breathable materials like linen and cotton or thin fabrics such as polyester help to keep you cool. In the winter, thicker materials are required to create an insulative layer between the cloth and your skin. These fabrics include silk, satin, jersey and velvet.

However, remember that it’s not only the weather outside that you have to contend with. Most winter weddings are largely indoors in venues with heating or roaring fires, and you might get uncomfortable in velvet and similarly dense fabrics.

Consider sleeved designs

Covering more skin is an obvious way to stay warmer, and this is easily achieved while remaining chic. Look at wedding guest dresses with longer sleeves to the elbow, three-quarters down the arm or to the wrist. You could also consider designs with a high neckline in a midi or maxi length or wearing tights underneath shorter dresses.

Incorporate seasonal colours

A surefire way to look the part at a winter wedding is to incorporate seasonal colours. Rather than opting for pretty pastels like pink and lilac which are associated with spring, embrace the winter palette of rich, dark shades. These range from jewel colours like emerald and ruby to more subtle shades such as navy blue and plum.

Remember that it’s perfectly acceptable to glitter at events around the party season, so if the couple-to-be approve you could go all out in dazzling sequins or dress up plain designs with bold gold or silver jewellery.

Add stylish accessories

It might be cold and grey outside, but that doesn’t mean your outfits should be equally dreary. Bring light and excitement to your look with stylish accessories that will turn heads.

Top your outfit with a wrap or tailored coat to help you stay warm while you’re outdoors such as when waiting for taxis or moving between venues. This will complete the look and ensure the cold doesn’t spoil your experience of the event. If you want to go all-out, go for a faux-fur stole in the manner of a ‘20s flapper and arrange it artfully around your neck and shoulders.

When it comes to shoes, don’t risk towering high heels on icy ground! Boots or sturdy platforms can be just as elegant and impactful and will give you the confidence to walk tall at the wedding. Closed-toe styles will stop your toes from turning to ice if most of the wedding will be outdoors under heaters!

Keep comfort in mind

Whatever you opt for, remember to keep comfort front of mind. Your priority should be feeling good and having the flexibility to dance and have fun to celebrate the union of your friends.
