Hotel Chocolat – Chocolate Crownies

TRIPLE CHOCOLATE CROWNIES

crownies - hotel chocolat

Chocolate. It’s safe to say this Mama loves a little bit of chocolate, and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one, right!? The lovely folk at Hotel Chocolat sent me a copy of their cookbook last week – ‘A new way of cooking with chocolate’. It’s full of amazing sounding recipies, and not just for naughty treats/desserts either. There are loads of main course recipes with chocolate in them – you could probably create an entire three-course meal with chocolate based dishes. Just sayin’

Anyway, after drooling over the book for a few days, we decided to test out these ‘Crownies’ for our first bake. According to the book, they’re part cookie and part brownie and FULL of chocolate which is good enough reason for me to test out. I can confirm taht they are probably the tastiest thing I have made/eaten this year. Truly. The recipe uses nuts, but as Miss Baya is not a fan, I switched those for white chocolate chips, also I had milk chocolate chips in the cupbaord so used those in place of the dark chocoalte. Either way, I think these would be super tasty – def one to make when you have guests coming – they’ll be swooning over your amazing baking skills for days.

C R O W N I E S

200g butter,
50g caster sugar
100g soft brown sugar
1 egg
275t plain flour
25g cocoa powder
1 tsp baking powder
200g dark chocolate, chopped into small pieces
200g whole roasted hazelnuts

Heat oven to 160C, line & grease two baking trays
Cream butter and sugar together, beat in the egg.
Add in flour, baking powder, cocoa powder and stir until mixed.
Stir through choclate/nuts and bring to a dough with your hands.
Form into 16 balls, spread evenly on the two trays and then flatten each one slightly.
Bake them for around 10-12 minutes.

We ate the first ones straight out of hte oven as they smlet so good baking we couldn’t wait a single minute more. Hot or cold these taste amazing. So bad they’re good. The only downside is that a batch of 16 between 5 of us didn’t last very long….. Double batch next time!

What a delicious sounding cookbook. I love how versatile chocolate is in baking, there’s so much you can do with it.

My favourite chocolate bar is a crunchie, I like to nibble off the chocolate and then eat the honeycomb, strange but delicious!
