Garden Love

We’re lucky to have a fairly large garden, especially considering we live right in the town centre. Now the summer is here, we spend most of our days out there. The kiddos have a trampoline, swing set, climbing frame, slide and sandpit set up {plus a paddling pool when it’s warm enough!} Coupled with a lawn and trees to climb and they have pretty much everything they need.

The garden was the biggest selling point of the house. I knew that we’d have space to have chickens and a veggie patch. I have dreams of a smallholding and being entirely self-sufficient, but for now I’m happy with what space we have. Nine chickens provide more than enough eggs, we’re hoping to add a couple more Blackrocks to our brood soon as well as a couple of ducks.

My lovely, handy husband built me a few raised beds, fenced off to keep chickens and little feet safely away. The perks of having a joiner husband! This years crops include: pototoes, onions, garlic, tomatoes, courgettes, broccoli, squash, spinach, peas, carrots, radishes, beetroot, mixed salad, corn and lots and lots of strawberries!! THe girls love helping plant and water and watching those seeds grow day by day. Nothing tastes so good as fruit and veg straight from the garden.

I grew up watching my Dad tend his veggie patch, growing my own is normal to me. I can’t imagine not having a garden to nurture. I have a pile of books to inspire and refer to. A good read to inspire you if you’re at the begining of your homesteading journey is Made from Scratch The book tells Jenna’s journey to self-suffieciency {she also blogs at Cold Antler Farm}. Two of my essential books, that get thumbed through endlessly and refered to weekly are The New Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency and The Garden Primer.

What a great little veggie patch and garden, love the chickies :) We’ve got a small veggie patch and we too would love to have a small holding one day. Another book that I can recommend is ‘Down to Earth’ by Rhonda Hetzel, even though she’s Australian, I think she has some relevant info for anyone wanting to live a simpler more sustainable life, she also blogs at ‘Down to Earth’ and there is also a simple living forum with people contributing their ideas from all over the world :)

I’m so jealous of your yard space and that fact that you have it and live right near the town center, that’s so awesome…the best of both worlds! Thank you for sharing your little space with us…I love seeing its progress :)

thankyou! i was so excited when we came to look at this house and saw the outside space – even though it was waist high in weeds, and the bottom half was so overgrown you couldn’t get through the gate!!
