Pink Parcel + International Womens Day

Last week I was talking about the women who inspired me and the importance of women celebrating other women. This coming Sunday {March 8th} is International Womens Day. The first International Women’s Day was held in 1911. It’s a day full of events to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.

I think how lucky we are to live in a day when we as women have the opportunities that we do, that we are no longer second to men and that we can choose to go out to work, to stay home and raise a family or do whatever it is that makes us happy. What could be better than a day dedicated to uniting with fellow mothers, daughters, sisters and friends, to honour womankind and celebrate the encouraging, inspiring women in our lives who we love and admire?

International Womens Day is now an official holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal (for women only), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries International Womens Day has the equivalent status of Mother’s Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

I wish there was more empowerment of women, especially in some parts of the world where they are considered secondary to men.
