5 tips for buying a used car

With plans to start my driving lessons in the next few weeks, I’m starting to think about buying a car next year. I’ll be saving up for a few months, and keeping my eyes open for a second-hand car. Obviously, I need a people carrier as there are so many of us to fit in! Ideally, I’d love a 9-seater van, but that might not be my first vehicle – but the extra space would be perfect for fitting in all our camping gear when we go to festivals. I need something that is economical, reliable and doesn’t cost too much to buy! There are lots of factors to consider when purchasing a second-hand car, thankfully my big brother knows a little about cars so I’ll be asking him for some help I think! One big plus to buying a second-hand car is that you can purchase a luxury car, which perhaps you couldn’t fit into your budget otherwise.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing a second-hand car:

1| Choose a reliable dealer

It’s worth asking around friends who have purchased second-hand cars, to ensure that the dealer you choose is reliable and reputable. You don’t want to be ripped off, or have a dealer who’ll sell you a car that isn’t up to scratch. If you have any post-sales issues you need to know that you can rely on your dealer to help you fix them.

2| Check the car over

It’s important to check the tyres – looking for a legal tread depth, and no signs of major damage. Also check for dents and scratches on the bodywork. It’s worth inspecting the windshield for any chips, as well as checking that all the electrics work. While things can be fixed, the price should reflect any damage/broken parts in the vehicle.

A used car is bound to have a relatively worn out interior, especially if the owner hasn’t refitted them with new accessories since they bought the car. You should factor in the cost of getting replacement car accessories, such as seat covers, floor mats, and dash mats, in your budget.

3| Check the MOT and service history

You can check the MOT history online, it is worth checking that there is a valid MOT certificate, and also any adviseries that have been highlighted. If you are spending money on a car, it’s good to be able to check it’s service history to ensure it has been looked after.

4| Check the car history

Use a service to check the history of the car you’re looking at. You can find out if it’s been stolen. written off or has outstanding finance, as well as mileage discrepancies, independent reviews, valuation and average running costs.

5| Test drive the car

If you’re happy with the car, it’s a good idea to have a test drive before handing over your cash.  Take it for a drive and make sure everything sounds right, that it runs as it should, that the breaks and transmission work and that you enjoy driving it.

I’m so excited to have my very first car! DO you have any tips for purchasing a vehicle? A good place to look if you are hunting for a second hand prestige car then visit KAP Motors and take your pick from a wide variety of brands.
