Ready to move house? Professional movers have been used for ages because they work faster, keep your belongings safe, and help you avoid accidents and injury during the transition. Everyone agrees that with the right moving company, the whole event is infinitely less stressful. Yet today, we’re sharing some helpful tips that will further ensure that your move goes off without a hitch.

Getting Ready

First, read the reviews of various movers and select the one with the best reputation, rates, and equipment. From there, you’ll get a rundown of everything those movers will be responsible for as you schedule your date. Some people also have a professional moving company pack for them, but more often than not, this is something people choose to do themselves.

Before you hang up the phone with your mover, make sure you’re aware of a few important pieces of information. First, ask what the movers won’t move. Many companies have policies in place which prohibit them from moving things like large amounts of cash, your dog, or those cans of paint you have in the garage. Have a clear idea of what you’ll have to move yourself.

Also inquire about insurance, or coverage for your belongings. The coverage they offer will likely be either by weight, or a more comprehensive plan. If you have very expensive furniture, you might not like the idea of your stuff being insured by the pound, since you’d be highly unlikely to recoup the total value. If the company you like best doesn’t offer a comprehensive form of coverage, consider getting another policy to fill in any gaps.

Moving Day Tips

While professionals movers do a great deal of the heavy lifting, there are still some things you can do to make the day go well for everyone. Much of this involves the way you’ve packed. The key idea is that you’ve finished packing prior to the mover’s arrival. Desperately rushing to throw everything into boxes as they are attempting to load disrupts their well-practiced workflow, and overall makes the move more disorganized.

If you’ve done your due diligence in packing, try to sort boxes by weight, and make them accessible. Of course some things will be too heavy or cumbersome to bring to the front entrance, but having the bulk of the boxes in one area can help a team of movers strategize properly, and make the work go by faster.

Of course it isn’t required, but hospitality also matters to movers. Have beverages on hand, such as water or sports drinks with electrolytes, as refreshments. It’s also a good idea to have snacks to share.

Many people opt to buy their movers lunch during break, which is appreciated. If this doesn’t fit with the schedule, do remember to tip each mover on the team at the end of the day.

Professional movers will use their expertise to make your move a positive experience, but your cooperation is still important. Be sure everything is packed the day of, and show your movers a little hospitality – they work hard, and there’s a good chance that your move isn’t their only job of the day.
