Fictional pets we’ve all dreamed about owning in real life

We all love our furry and feathered friends at home, but there’s something unique about pets on big and small screens and in storybooks that we just can’t help but want as our own.

We wouldn’t mind adding a dragon, a snowy owl that can send messages or a surfing alien to our families. Here’s a list of our favourite fictional pets we’ll always dream about owning in real life.

Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon

Aside from the fact that we could fly on the back of Toothless – let’s just let that sink in for a second – he’s also incredibly smart and, while kind of intimidating with the whole fire-breathing thing, he’s loyal and protective. He helps prove to Hiccup’s dad that not all dragons are ferocious. Plus, he’d be really helpful for getting the kids to play-dates on time, and in style.

Hedwig from the Harry Potter franchise

If we’re talking winged sidekicks, Hedwig is a step above the rest. At times she’s Harry Potter’s only connection to the outside world, and when the going gets tough, she’s there to protect him every step of the way. Head to the Harry Potter Studio Tour down in London and you’ll see her on display alongside other original props and sets from the film, plus visiting exhibits like the Forbidden Forest and Wizarding Wardrobes. If we put a spell on her cinematic stand-in, maybe Hedwig could be our real life pet after all.

Pusheen

We love Garfield as much as the next person, but when it comes to cat cuteness, nobody beats Pusheen. Pusheen is the perfect kitty pet because she loves adventure, she’ll always encourage you to eat junk food when you crave it, and she looks absolutely fabulous in whatever costume she’s found herself in. Put a chef’s hat on her, stick her on a bike, give her a little moustache and she’s set for just about any party. Did we mention she loves a party?

Dug from Up

Dug is quite possibly the most lovable goof in the history of fictional pets. He might get a little side-tracked with squirrels and yes, he’s a little ditzy, but he’s loyal to no end and isn’t afraid to say he loves you. Oh, and he can talk. We’re pretty sure that having a talking dog as your best friend is everyone’s dream.

Stitch from Lilo and Stitch

Stitch might be an unconventional choice for a pet, but he’s whip smart and, once you get through that crafty, neon blue exterior, he’s incredibly loving. He also helps little outsider Lilo feel more on the inside – they’re basically the yin to the other’s yang. Disney legend says that the two weren’t originally supposed to meet, but we’re really glad that Lilo and Stitch found each other in the end.

We might need to tack on an extra room of the house to accommodate these larger than life personalities, but we’re okay with that. Who’s your favourite fictional pet?

I always wanted a dragon and you mentioned it as your #1 also. I guess dragons are everyone’s favorite fictional pets!
