5 reasons I am considering laser eye surgery

I’ve had to wear glasses since I was 16 and first was at college. I realised that I couldn’t read what was written on the board at the front of the classroom clearly, I had an eye test which confirmed my short-sightedness and I got my first pair of glasses.

Glasses that I barely wore. As a teenager who was already uncomfortable with her appearance, I felt even more awkward in glasses and my vision wasn’t so poor that I couldn’t cope without wearing them. Fast forward 20-odd years, and while I’d had new glasses a few times over the years, I still barely wore my glasses. My eyesight hadn’t really deteriorated any further but also I was so used to a world that was a little blurry it was normal!

It was only when I began to learn to drive aged 40 that I started having to wear my glasses more frequently. Now that I have been driving for 18 months, I wear my glasses on a daily basis and I’ve really noticed just how much better I can see when I am wearing them! I now reach for them when I’m watching TV, at the Cinema, or out somewhere I need to be able to see a long way away.

I’m still not overly keen on wearing glasses all the time, I don’t like how they look and they can often be a bit of an inconvenience, steaming up when I am driving for example! so I’ve recently been looking into laser eye surgery. While the idea makes me a little nervous, the more I’ve researched the better of an idea it sounds to me;

Improve my vision

20/20 vision certainly is a wonderful thought, and being able to see clearly without having to wear glasses would be great. No more blurry vision or squinting sounds like a dream!

Long-lasting results

Laser eye surgery is something that has effects that last a long time, while it seems some people might need a ‘top up’ in the future, this isn’t something that you need to repeat frequently.

Improved Self-Confidence

For me, personally, I feel very awkward wearing glasses. Even though people tell me they suit me, I still don’t feel comfortable. So taking away the need for them I hope will make me feel more confident.

Quick Recovery

One thing I was unsure about was how long laser eye surgery would take to recover from. From all I’ve read, most people are back to normal after a day or two, with only a little mild discomfort from the procedure.

Money Saving

While there is obviously an up front cost to laser eye surgery, compared with the costs of eye tests, new glasses, contacts, etc over the years it can actually end up being more cost-effective.

Have you had laser eye surgery? I’d be really interested in hearing your experiences of it while I’m deciding if it is the right decision for me – it’s always good to hear some first hand accounts!
