Our Weaning Challenge – trying out Fish Pie with SMA Nutrition

I posted a couple of weeks ago about SMA® Nutrition’s Come & Wean with Us™ campaign. I’ve been really excited for Vega and I to be a part of it, as weaning is such an exciting time for your little one but it can also seem daunting if you’re doing it for the first time. They have a great range of weaning recipes on their website – great for giving you some ideas of what to feed your baby at each stage of weaning.

We all love food in my house, and ever since Vega was big enough to sit in his highchair he wanted to be sat at the table when we were eating and joining in with us. He had finger foods from being around 5 months old {not that he ate much of them} as he wanted to be like his sisters. In the first year, food is about learning –  about new textures, flavours and the whole social side of mealtimes.

SMA Follow-on Milk is a great choice for babies who are bottlefed, or even if you breastfeed and don’t express milk to cook with, as its perfect for ensuring they get all the vitamins and goodness that they need.

One big thing I’ve learnt from weaning four children is the importance of keeping weaning fun. Not making a ‘thing’ out of food, not worrying about how much they eat or don’t, not worrying about the mess they make or if they clear their plate or not. Right now it’s important for them to try lots of different tastes and textures and to have fun with their food – yes, I encourage a little bit of playing with food!

This week, Vega has been trying out the stage two Fish Pie recipe from celeb mum Sheree Murphy. While Vega loves to feed himself, he also loves to have some food that I feed him {he’s a hungry boy and can’t get enough!}.

I made a little video showing how we got on with making and taste testing the recipe….

While Vega normally eats pretty much whatever we eat, I loved making this for him – we are not big fish eaters but I think it’s important that he gets to try things even if I don’t like them. The video is a great guide if you’re a little unsure of cooking for your baby. If you are looking for weaning advice and or some recipe inspiration, I’d thoroughly recommend checking out the SMA Nutrition website.

Why not try one of these recipes out with your little one? If you do try one, or a recipe of your own creation, send me a photo of your little one and you could win £100 of fresh food vouchers. I’ll pick my favourite on XXX

I completely agree you need to make weaning fun and pretty relaxed. If they’re hungry they will eat and it’s ok if they don’t like certain things (in my experience anyway)

Baby’s tastebuds develop in the first year – the best time to introduce new flavours otherwise they may reject them. Pickle ate brilliantly at that age – now at 3, he is a fussy little monkey! Kaz x

Ah I totally agree, it’s really important to let children try all sorts of food in their own time. The only problem I had though was that we did all of that and it worked too well and backfired – now my little monsters eat everything. Even cherished adult foods like hot curry’s, olives and avocado aren’t safe. I’d love it if occasionally I could just eat a whole meal to myself ;)

Love your weaning photos. I agree that it is important to let little ones try things we don’t like ourselves – all to easy to forget that I think!

My daughter loved her food at This age. Weaning was a lot of fun for us and I remember as if it were yesterday. I love the high hair in the pictures! Anga

Really great post, my son was so bad with weaning as he had really bad reflux.

Fab post, I agree about letting them try things we don’t eat! My other half is really fussy but I persevered with our son getting him to try the stuff my OH doesn’t like and now he loves them, yay!

I agree, it’s important to make weaning fun and introduce lots of tastes, colours and textures. My 18 month old will eat anything while my 6 year old is so fussy I despair! My son loves fish pie, it’s one of his favourite meals x

Yum! Amelia used to love fish pie when she was weaning now she’ s going through a fussy phase so feels like all that work weaning was a waste! Hoping it’s just a phase. Think we need to bring the fun back to mealtimes x

This looks great Polly and looks like Vega loved it! I haven’t tried Harry with any other fish other than fish fingers yet so will give this a go. We did the beef and carrot risotto for our challenge and Harry loved that! Think vega would too! xx
