Way back when…

alt=”playing nurses” src=”http://thisenchantedpixie.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/playing-nurses.jpg” width=”100%” />

We have a giant metal box full of unsorted out photos, some from when I was little, some from when G was little, some of our kiddos growing up over the years. There are albums that are all in chronological order, but the kiddos much prefer to get the box out for a good rumage. You never seem to pull the same photos out twice! They especially love finding the ones of Mama and Papa growing up. They’re always slighlty amused to be reminded that we really were little once too!

When I was a little girl, my Papa used to love taking photos. He even had a darkroom to develop his own prints. This means, that from a time before digital, we have a crazy amount of photos of us all. When the girls dig in the box, and pull out one of ‘little mama’ they love to ask what, why, where. How old was I? What was I doing? It’s great to see the memories flood back from one little photo.

I love this one above, I guess I was about 2/3?? I remember loving to play nurses SO much with my dolls! I can remember that costume so clearly, and how much I loved it! Occasionally, my Grandma would babysit me for the day if both my Mama and Papa were working. I loved to lie on her couch and play nurses with her. She’d take my temperature, and ask me what was wrong. My favourite bit though, was when she took my pulse, because she could never find it! I used to love it when she’d tell me I didn’t have a pulse…. I never questioned that, obviously, I did have one, and she was just pretending. It actually wasn’t until years and years later, when I was telling someone this story, that I realised that. I was a little sad that I’d had a pulse all along ha!!

Do you have any favourite photos from when you were little?

    Such a cute pic! When I was 3 my parents took me to Osborne House, one of Queen Victorias houses, and I decided I was Queen Victoria and spent whole weeks in a ball gown and a crown only answering to Victoria. There are a few photos of that kicking around at my Mums- oddly as an adult I can think of little I would rather less do for a job than be in the Royal Family!

      hehe!! love that – but agree, as an adult I can’t think of anything I’d less like to do than be in the royal family!`

    Oh my goodness! I love that costume. I actually don’t have pictures of when I was little. I need to scan some when I go home to Trinidad later this year. I was thinking it’s a shame I don’t have any with my parents from that time or my grandparents. This is a reminder to pop it on a to-do list.

    I am lucky, my parents, even though they are divorced, took some lovely pictures of us growing up, and both me and my sister have some displayed in our own houses. For our daughter’s christening, we asked for pictures of everybody who was coming when they were a baby, and then put them in a big frame to display on the day, and put in her playroom. I also used scraps of my wedding bunting fabric to back the pictures, which made it feel really ‘our family’. Love a good little girl’s nurses outfit – such a big part of play!

    Adorable! I loved to play ‘Barber Shop’ with my Grampa when I was around 3 or 4. At the end of the night before bed, he’d sit in his easy chair and I’d take a comb and a spray bottle (and a stool to stand on haha) and style his perfectly white hair for him. I remember focusing so hard and taking my time to get it just the way he liked it. When I was finished he would always tell me what a great job I’d done, how his hair had never looked better and that feeling of pride was amazing! Such great memories!

    I loved playing market stalls when I was little…or chasing our animals in the garden. Luckily there are quite a few photos of me from back then so I can relive the memories over and over.

    I have loads of favourite pics from when I was little. My mum made me a whole photo album of me when I was little up to the age of 6. I think it’s so lovely for kids see pictures of themselves when they were younger and my boys find it so much fun! It allows you to hold onto memories that you otherwise might forget. It’s on my list of things to do…get books printed of all those digital files I have sitting on computers!

    I love retro photos – there’s something about the colour that captures the time so perfectly and just can’t be replicated. Love the one of you as a nurse!!

    I recently looked through my mums photos and it seemed like there were a lot less than there used to be when I was little. I wonder if there really are or if it just seemed different from my perspective as a child? I enjoyed seeing all the photos of my brothers and sister as were growing up and I plan to scan them in to my computer so I can make sure we all have copies of them :)
