YHA Bristol – our stay

When we visited Bristol last week, we stayed at the Youth Hostel. I’ve stayed at youth hostel once before, many years ago, on a trip with my Mum’s school and thirty-odd 7 year olds. The YHA were kind enough to provide us with a family room for the two nights that we stayed in Bristol. The youth hostel was right in the centre of the city, which for us was perfect. We wanted to be central so that we could meet friends, and visit all of the sights. Thankfully it was only a ten minute walk from the train station, as it seems to be impossible to travel light with three kiddos in tow! We arrived mid-morning, and while we couldn’t check into our room until the afternoon, they were happy for us to leave our luggage locked in their luggage room, meaning we could go off exploring for the afternoon without having to take our mountain of stuff with us.

The girls were really excited to stay at the hostel, they were especially excited by the keycard that not only opened our room but also worked the lift…. queue arguements over whose turn it was to call the lift, and lots of trips to the toilet so that they could use the key to get back in the room! Who knew a piece of plastic would provide so much excitement?!

The room itself, while basic, was clean and warm. We had a room with two sets of bunkbeds, thankfully they were big enough for me and G to sit on the bottom bunks and not bump our heads ;) The hostel had everything we needed – a self catering kitchen, showers, a lounge and a cafe/bar downstairs where we could buy a snack if needed.

The only downside we found was not having a kettle/bathroom in our room. I like a cup of tea as soon as I wake up, and I’m not sure G was thrilled that I made him run down to the kitchen early each morning to fill up our thermos!! The room we stayed in also didn’t have an en-suite, which with little kiddos can prove a bit of a pain, especially in the middle of the night.

We all slept soundly, bar Tuesday evening when a large group of French students arrived at 11pm just as the bigger two were trying to get to sleep and spent an hour making a lot of noise! The walls and door didn’t seem to buffer much of the noise from the hallway creeping into the room.

All in all, though, we enjoyed our stay. The staff were lovely and really helpful, and the central location was perfect.

The YHA provided us with a family room free of charge, but all words and opinions are my own

I haven’t been to a youth hostel since I was 16. Me & my friends went to Scarborough for a week and stayed at their youth hostel, it was so much fun. I didn’t realise you could stay there as a family, good to know! x

That looks great. I’ve just booked a hotel for Bristol as we’re watching a band there in April. Wish I’d thought of this now. Will definitely take a look when we go there next with the kids. Dave often wears that Iron Maiden t-shirt so I took a second glance as I scrolled down, seeing a similar beard, tattoos and tee! Haha! He’s not organised enough to wear a watch though! ;-) xxx

Love the first pic. Reminds me of my Summer down in Newquay when I was 17, I stayed in loads of hostels down there. It was fun! x

I’ve only ever stayed in youth hostels when travelling about by myself, and have never even thought of staying there with a family! Sounds like its always a bit of a gamble as who will be staying there, but looks like it ticks lots of other boxes! Will definitely keep it in mind if we travel anywhere!

all my holidays as a child were in youth hostels and I loved the bunking in my family vibe about it! There are some really snazzy ones now, we are thinking of staying over at the St Pancreas one soon! Totally agree about the kettle though, essential! x

I you’re ever thinking of going to York, I’d recommend the Youth Hostel there. We’ve stayed there twice and it’s great.
