Not Back To School

012

We’re ‘not back to school’ this week… in other words, our long, lazy summer break is over and I have to *try* and get up at an earlier hour. Ahem… so far… not so good ;) Really though, we’re excited to get back into learning. Over the summer we’ve made a list of things that we want to cover this coming term. Lola is beginning to work on high school level English and History – two of her favourite subjects. That kid is like a walking history encyclopedia – she knows so much that even I don’t. This year we’re starting to look at British history more in-depth and at a higher level. That is what I love about homeschooling the most – the freedom for the kids to work at the level that suits them, not the one dictated by their age.

We don’t use any set curriculum, or have a set timetable. We pick and choose, and follow what the kids interests are in. Mornings are usually ‘sit down and work time’, mainly through projects as opposed to me teaching, them learning.

The kiddos are looking forward to some fun science experiments and some nature study {this book and this one are fantastic!}

We’re planning some field trips also which we’re all excited about – Delemere Forest is our destination next week with friends, for a bug spotting and den building day. I’m so grateful to have my kiddos home with me, and to be able to make learning such fun. That’s not to say we don’t have days that are hard, we do… five people in one house, together all the time, there are days we drive each other crazy ha! But still, I don’t think I’d change a single thing.

    Yes! We had our first ‘not-back-to-school’ meeting this morning. No tears from anyone, so I count that as a major success ;)
